Jan. 10, 2020 / Mazatlan Book Fair (“FeLiM”) / “A Conversation with Janet Blaser & Deborah Rodriguez, Hosted by Arturo Santamaria”
Need I say how thrilled I am to be sharing the stage with International best-selling author Deborah Rodriguez and noted sociology professor, author and newspaper columnist Arturo Santamaria?! Woo-hoo! (Full disclosure: Both are my friends here in Mazatlan, but still…)
Debbie is the author of five books, with another about to be released. Her first and biggest seller is an account of her time spent in Afghanistan, where she opened a beauty salon and school.
Since then, she’s moved to Mazatlan, Mexico, where she opened Tippy Toes Salon and continued writing four more novels, all set in different countries. The newest, “Island on the Edge of the World,” set in Haiti, has been released in Australia but not yet in the US.
Arturo is a noted and prolific author too, although he writes in Spanish so you may not be familiar with his work. Although he is a scholar and sociologist, his two most successful books are, predictably, “Las Jefas del Narco” (“The Narco Bosses”) and “Del Carnaval Reinas y Narco: El Terible Poder de La Belleza” (“Carnaval Queens & Narco: The Terrible Power of Beauty”)
And of course I’ll be speaking about my book, “Why We Left: An Anthology of American Women Expats.” This is going to be a lively discussion, with Arturo leading the conversation with his fascinating, calm sociological perspective. I can’t wait to see how it all ends up!
Mazatlan has a long history of hosting a book fair, but in recent years the event had somehow fell by the wayside. The new administration has revived it, and the program has authors and poets speaking as well as musical performances almost every hour throughout the four days and nights. (The vast majority are in Spanish, featuring Mexican personalities; you can find that schedule here.) Below is the program for the expat authors from Mazatlan.
If you’re in Mazatlan, please come to our event this Friday, Jan. 10 at 3pm! It will be a fun and lively conversation, and Debbie’s, Arturo’s and my books available for purchase and signing. Casa Haas is on the corner of Heriberto Frias & Mariano Escobedo, one block from the Plaza Machado in Centro Historico, across from Hector’s Bistro. (Enter on Mariano Escobedo.) Hope to see you there!
